Ingredients

Scale

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 small onion, diced

1 small bell pepper, diced

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 lb ground beef

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

2 Tbsp tomato paste

2 Tbsp honey or coconut sugar

1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar

1 tsp yellow mustard

1 tsp chili powder

1/2 tsp smoked paprika (increase to 1 tsp if you like it strong)

1 tsp salt, more as needed

1/8 tsp black pepper

Sprouted Ezekiel buns for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large 17-inch skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook until softened and the onions are translucent and golden, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spatula, about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Turn the temperature down to low and add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, honey, vinegar, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir until well combined.
  4. Let the mixture simmer for 8-10 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
  5. Serve on hamburger buns and enjoy with a side salad or other side of choice.
