Healthy Turkey Sloppy Joes

Dairy-Free, Dinner, Nut-Free, Quick and Easy 2 comments

Indulge in sloppy joes without sacrificing your health goes. These are absolutely delicious and a total crowd pleaser. Nobody would know that they are healthy!

How are they healthy?

Instead of using brown sugar, I use honey for this recipe as the sweetener. I also call for using tomato sauce or a healthier ketchup rather than the traditional high-sugar ketchup that some recipes call for.

I also used healthier buns for the recipe, but you can use whatever you want. I used sprouted Ezekiel buns by Food For Life Baking (you can find them in the frozen bread section). I also enjoy this recipe with just regular sprouted bread, sourdough, or gluten-free alternatives!

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce (or 2/3 cup healthy unsweetened ketchup)

2 Tbsp tomato paste

2 Tbsp honey

1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar

1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional – you can sub coconut aminos or omit)

1 tsp yellow mustard

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the ground turkey and cook until browned, breaking up any large chunks with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Turn the temperature down to a simmer and add the tomato paste, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir until well combined.
  4. Let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
