Ingredients

1 pound ground turkey

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 small onion, diced

1 small bell pepper, diced

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce (or 2/3 cup healthy unsweetened ketchup)

2 Tbsp tomato paste

2 Tbsp honey

1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar

1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional – you can sub coconut aminos or omit)

1 tsp yellow mustard

1 tsp smoked paprika

1 tsp chili powder

1/2 tsp salt (use a little more if you use tomato sauce with no added salt)

1/8 tsp black pepper

Sprouted Ezekiel buns for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the ground turkey and cook until browned, breaking up any large chunks with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Turn the temperature down to a simmer and add the tomato paste, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir until well combined.
  4. Let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
  5. Serve on your choice of buns and enjoy!
