This homemade spaghetti sauce is a great go-to recipe. Feel free to add a lb of ground meat such as beef, turkey, chicken, venison, or lamb. Read the notes section for more info!
- Prep Time: 15 minutes
- Cook Time: 20 minutes
- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 4 servings 1x
- Category: Sauce
- Method: Stovetop
- Cuisine: Italian
Ingredients
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 large sweet onion, diced
1 cup mushrooms, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
28 oz can organic crushed tomatoes
15 oz can organic tomato sauce
1 cup lightly packed fresh basil, chopped
1 tsp salt
Several grinds of fresh black pepper
Instructions
- Brown the onion with the olive oil in a large stainless steel skillet on medium heat. Add the mushrooms and minced garlic and sauté a couple mins, stirring well.
- Turn heat to low. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, chopped basil, salt, and freshly ground pepper.
- Turn up heat until mixture is sizzling. Then turn down to simmer, cover the pan with a top (leave it slightly cracked), then let simmer for 20-30 minutes or up to 2 hours to allow the flavors to develop. Stir occasionally to ensure the sauce isn’t sticking to the bottom.

Notes
If you want to add ground meat to the recipe, then add 1 lb of desired ground meat and brown it in the pan with the onion and 1 teaspoon of salt. Then follow the rest of the recipe as described.
For the noodles, you can use:
Zucchini noodles
Spaghetti Squash
Banza Pasta (made from chickpeas) – this is my favorite go-to healthy pasta brand!
Lentil Pasta (“Ancient Harvest” and “Tolerant” are good brands)
