Savory Moroccan Spice Blend

How-To Guides 3 comments

I love using Moroccan spices for cooking, such as in this Moroccan Chicken & Veggies dish and this Moroccan Chicken Nourish Bowl. I decided to make a Savory Moroccan Spice Blend in bulk because it makes it easier to throw together delicious Moroccan-inspired dishes! This blend embraces many classic Moroccan seasonings such as cumin, turmeric, and cinnamon. I personally use a higher amount of turmeric for the anti-inflammatory benefits, but if the sound of a lot of turmeric breaks your interest, don’t worry. Turmeric actually isn’t my favorite flavor – but I love this Moroccan Spice Blend because although it has a lot of turmeric in it, it’s not the primary flavor you taste. This blend has a delicious combination of spices to create a warm, savory, Moroccan-inspired flavor.

Ingredients

Ground cumin – Cumin has a slightly sweet, warming flavor with a nutty element. It is commonly used in Latin American, Middle Eastern, African, and Indian cuisines.

Ground turmeric – An anti-inflammatory spice that is a beautiful bright yellow color. Be sure to always pair it with a touch of black pepper to fully reap the anti-inflammatory properties.

Ground cinnamon – A traditional spice in moroccan food that adds warmth to dishes. If you haven’t cooked savory dishes with cinnamon yet, then it may seem odd to you. But give it a try, and I promise you will love it! As for the type of cinnamon you use, I always recommend using Ceylon instead of Saigon. Although the Saigon variety is more commonly used in the U.S, it contains higher amounts of coumarin, a compound that is damaging to the liver if consumed in excess. Most people do not have to worry about consuming it in excess, though, unless you eat Saigon cinnamon every single day. However, I still prefer Ceylon cinnamon because it is much higher quality, is very low in coumarin, and contains anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. Ceylon cinnamon enhances antioxidant and enzyme activity, and it supports immune health. You can buy it in bulk here.

Garlic powder – Adds a savory flavor that we all know and love. Garlic also has wonderful immune-boosting benefits.

Ground black pepper – A classic spice for many cuisines, for good reason! It adds a delicious flavor to just about anything. Plus, it’s important to pair turmeric with black pepper because it helps our body absorb the curcumin in the turmeric. The curcumin component of turmeric is what has anti-inflammatory properties.

Ground cayenne pepper – To add a spicy kick if desired. Cayenne pepper is known to aid digestion, relieve migraines, prevent blood clots, promote detoxification, relieve pain, support weight loss and boost the metabolism.

Method

  1. Mix together all of the spices in a bowl.
  2. Transfer to an airtight container and store in a cool, dry, and dark area such as the pantry.

Modifications

  • Increase or decrease the cayenne pepper to preference. You can also omit it from the recipe if you don’t want it.
  • Add cloves or nutmeg for extra warmth. These are other classic moroccan seasonings. I opted out for this specific mix, but feel free to add them if you want!
  • Sub half of the turmeric for paprika for a less turmeric-rich blend. This still creates a classic moroccan blend, and is still very delicious!

What to use this Savory Moroccan Spice Blend for

Chicken

Turkey

Burgers

Nourish Bowls

Wraps

Veggies

Sweet potato fries

Moroccan breakfast hash

…and much more!

How to store homemade spices

Store homemade spices in an airtight container in a dark, cool, and dry place such as the pantry.

What containers to use for spices

I have started homemaking a lot of my spice blends lately, so I went ahead and purchased this Glass Spice Jar set. These jars are 8 oz, so they are good for large quantities of spices. Even if I am not homemaking my spices, I like to bulk-buy them to save money. If you want smaller sized spice jars (a more typical size), then go ahead and purchase these 4oz jars.

I hope you love this Savory Moroccan Spice Blend! Please be sure to leave a comment on the post and a review on the recipe card. Your support allows me to keep creating content for you! Thanks in advance!
