The BEST Homemade Deodorant (no rash!)

The BEST Homemade Deodorant (no rash!)

DIY 0 comments

I’ve been a huge fan of Primally Pure deodorant for more years than I can even count (at least 6 years I’m guessing!). They were the only natural deodorant brand that worked for me, where I didn’t need to reapply throughout the day. I also had my husband switch to their deodorant, but the cost started adding up because their deodorant isn’t cheap. So, I decided to get to work and make my own version! We’ve been using this homemade version for a while, and it literally works JUST AS GOOD as Primally Pure! I still highly recommend Primally Pure if you aren’t interested in making your own deodorant, but if you want to save some money, then you can make this homemade version. And let me say, I think my version smells even better! The combination of vanilla + orange is truly the BEST. I promise you’ll love this Homemade Deodorant!

Benefits of this homemade deodorant

  • It actually works!! A lot of homemade deodorants use just a couple ingredients, and although they can be effective for some people, others may find that they need a little more help. I included additional ingredients in this deodorant that really take it to the next level for effectiveness. If you’ve ever tried Primally Pure deodorant, then you will love this one! I gained all my inspiration from their ingredients and made my own combination.
  • It won’t give you a rash like most other natural deodorants. The bulk of this deodorant is arrowroot powder instead of baking soda. Arrowroot is gentle on the skin, so this deodorant is amazing! It does have a small amount of baking soda, because it’s so efficient at neutralizes the acidic components of sweat, but it’s a very small amount compared to most other deodorants. If you are looking for a deodorant that doesn’t have any baking soda at all, then you can still use this recipe – and just replace the baking soda for more arrowroot powder (in a 1:1 ratio).
  • It smells so refreshing – I use vanilla oleoresin and sweet orange essential oil and it literally smells AMAZING. I can’t recommend the combo enough!!

Ingredients + their benefits

Arrowroot powder – This is the bulk ingredient for the deodorant because it is gentle on the skin, so it prevents rashes compared to using baking soda as the bulk ingredient. It helps absorb sweat and prevent body odor by reducing the moisture that the bacteria in our underarms thrive on.

Coconut oil – Is naturally antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti fungal.

Grass-fed tallow – Similar to the oils in human skin, it moisturizes efficiently and is less prone to clog pores.

Baking soda – Neutralizes the acidic components of sweat, which effectively eliminates odor-causing bacteria by creating an alkaline environment on the skin.

Koalin clay – Unclogs pores by absorbing excess oil and impurities from the skin.

Non-nano zinc oxide – Helps fight odor and protect the skin from bacteria and fungi. It eutralizes short-chain fatty acids that cause body odor.

Rosemary extract – Helps keep the deodorant fresh and prevents bacteria from growing. It also helps improve circulation, so is a great addition to the deodorant for skin health.

Vitamin E oil – Softens and soothes the skin and prevents any irritation.

Pure essential oils – my favorite combination BY FAR is using vanilla oleoresin and sweet orange essential oil. It smells divine!! I highly recommend it. I get them from Revive, which is a fantastic company with pure oils (no fragrance!) that’s also ethical. They also have free shipping in the US no matter the order price and free returns!

How to make Homemade Deodorant

  1. Use a double boiler or a small pot sitting inside a big pot (bigger pot filled with water for double boiler method).
  2. Add the coconut oil, grass-fed tallow, and beeswax to the top pot and melt over a little above medium heat until fully incorporated.
  3. Remove from heat. Add the arrowroot powder, bakings soda, non-nano zinc oxide, and kaolin clay and mix to combine.
  4. Then add the rosemary extract, vitamin E oil, and pure essential oils of choice and/or vanilla oleoresin. Mix to combine. It will have a spotted appearance because of the rosemary extract, and that’s totally fine!
  5. Let it cool for a couple more minutes then pour into a mini 4-oz mason jar or empty deodorant containers (You want to pour from the bottom NOT the top, unless you specifically have a top fill deodorant tube – MOST are bottom fill!)
  6. For the deodorant container: If you are reusing an old container, clean out any old deodorant, and take off the bottom cap of the container (what you use to twist up the deodorant). If you can’t take off the bottom cap, then I recommend buying empty deodorant containers. It won’t work to pour from the top because it will get into the twist compartment, which you don’t want. You also want to make sure the clear round inner lid is on securely because it is what will catch the deodorant and create the beautiful rounded top of the deodorant.
  7. After poured, do not put the bottom cap on yet. Place the deodorant in the refrigerator to harden. Once hardened, put the bottom cap on. If using reusable deodorant containers, please be sure to save the clear round inner lid for your next batch because you’ll need it each time.
  8. I hope you love it!! Be sure to leave a review if you try it out!

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 1 deodorant stick (2.5oz) 1x
  • Category: DIY, personal care
  • Method: Double boiler

Ingredients

Scale

1 1/2 Tbsp coconut oil (21g)

1 1/2 Tbsp Tallow from Grass-Fed Cows (21g)

2 tsp packed Beeswax (6g) – increase to 1 packed Tbsp (9g) if you prefer a harder rather than creamier texture

1/3 cup arrowroot powder (45g)

1 Tbsp baking soda (17g)

1 tsp Non-nano zinc oxide (2g)

1 tsp kaolin clay (2g)

10 drops rosemary extract (a little under 1/8 tsp)

4 drops Non-GMO Vitamin E (a little under 1/8 tsp)

1018 drops pure essential oils (I use half pure vanilla oleoresin and half sweet orange essential oil). Make sure there’s NO “fragrance” term used – a few trustable brands are Revive, Plant Therapy, Young Living. Lots of brands use fragrance, have poor ingredient quality, or harvest unethically.

Instructions

  1. Use a double boiler or a small pot sitting inside a big pot (bigger pot filled with water for double boiler method).

Notes

Scent for men: For my husband, I use these essential oils: 7 drops bergamot, 7 drops sweet orange, and 2 drops eucalyptus. Sandalwood would also be amazing in mens! I also add a little less than 1/16 of a tsp of activated charcoal powder to his deodorant. It can help more with detoxing the armpits and also give a gray tinge to the deodorant, which he seems to like.
